Sat 18 Nov / Quarterhouse
Francesca Martinez is a wobbly* comedian, writer and speaker who has toured internationally. She shares her funny, inspiring, personal and universal story with us.
*Oh yeah, she has mild cerebral palsy but she much prefers the word ‘wobbly’.
Francesca Martinez was the only woman to win the Open Mic Award. She has appeared in countless TV shows. Last year she opened BBC2’s Live At The Apollo, guested on BBC1’s Celebrity Pointless and was commissioned to write a play commemorating Shakespeare’s birth for BBC Radio 3. She co-presents BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends with Clive Anderson, and has this year been commissioned to write plays for BBC Radio 4 and the National Theatre.
From 2011 to 2013, her 50 date tour of Australia and 67 date tour of the UK and Ireland with What The Is Normal?! won her the Edinburgh Fringe Media Network Award 2011. Her best-selling book, What The Is Normal?!, was nominated Best Book in the Chortle Comedy Awards 2015, and garnered rave reviews from critics and the public alike.
In 2016 she supported Frankie Boyle on tour and was commissioned to write and perform a new comedy show: Francesca Martinez’s Wobbly Manifesto.
She was nominated for the 'Motivator of the Year' Award along with Sir Bob Geldof, was awarded Public Affairs Achiever of the Year 2013, and was nominated a Top Ten Game Changer in BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour Power List 2014, and Hero of the Year in the European Diversity Awards. Francesca has collected 100,000 signatures for the WOW campaign, leading to a historic debate on welfare cuts in the House of Commons.
